The first meaning of aggravate is to exacerbate or make worse.

  • The hockey player aggravated (worsened) a knee injury while playing last Saturday.

However, it is now used informally as a synonym for annoy.

  • My cousin’s twin daughters like to aggravate each other and their parents over the most trivial matters.
